EXHIBITIONS SWELL

Form in clay and on paper
Ceramics by Violet Cooper
Drawings by Mandy Robinson
Pairing the works of Violet Cooper and Mandy Robinson for SWELL seemed an obvious choice, and a satisfying one.
Violet’s ceramics, and Mandy’s drawings are structurally sound, impressive, engaging and sophisticated. They have an immediate vibrant presence, exuding exuberance and boldness, while also being subtle and gentle.
These chunky, swollen forms have been pushed to the limits, both in the clay and on paper. Creating such a voluminous mass entails a process of repetition, careful decision-making, and the meticulous integration of different elements to form a unified structure. The physical challenges of creating the works is disguised within Violet and Mandys’ calm and natural forms.
These humble works originate from the everyday routine, drawing inspiration and informing the process from what is readily available. Through colour, unconventional forms, pattern and in some instances the incorporation of text they draw us in and they make us feel good.
Violet Cooper is based in the Adelaide Hills (Peramangk Land) and will be showing a selection of ceramic vessels, vases and planters.
Mandy Robinson is based in Newcastle (Mulubinba) and will be showing a suite of small works.
