EXHIBITIONS SARAH NOLAN: HEDGED
20.07.24 to 31.08.24
The majority of the works in HEDGED are recent papier mache sculptures I have made in response to visits to some amazing gardens in the northern hemisphere. It wasn't just the hedges, but the unusual flowers, the use of space, the textures and colours. As well as visiting these idyllic environments we encountered city streets strewn with overflowing bins and mounds of multicoloured plastic bags full of rubbish. I started to see this waste as installations and sculpture-like. Human waste is a massive issue for the planet and always present no matter the amount of time you can escape to an English or French garden. You could also start to think about gardens and how manufactured they are, it's all really an illusion... but ultimately I had fun with the process of making these works, often made from waste and recycled materials.
Luke Sullivan review August 16
The hedges of England were the inspiration for Sarah Nolan's new exhibition at branch3d. And what a departure point! While most of us mere mortals struggle with defining what "contemporary art" actually is, Sarah just gets on with it. Her exploration of form, medium and colour is relentless. Far from being cute or feminine, this body of work seems to emerge from Sarah's dystopian vision. It's as unsettling as it is beautiful. In the 20 years I have known Sarah, I still can't pin her down. But that is the point. Try and see this exhibition as soon as you can. It's absolutely brilliant!
